Who is Lady Justice?

In Part by HRM Deborah

Lady Justice holding her scales and sword is a familiar icon of Law. Many images of her also include a blindfold.

Goddess or lady, statues and paintings represent the spirit of Justice as a woman with the scales of justice in one hand and a sword in the other. She is often wearing a blindfold, to show that Justice is blind; which was never the original intention for this symbol of Law.

While some claim that this image probably has roots in the Greek goddess Themis and the Roman goddess Justia. Its actual roots have to do with the prophecy of Deborah and the fact the sword’s name is “The balance of Justice.”

I happened upon this about the statue of lady Justice by accident in looking at a famous painting that is called I think, “the love of Truth and Justice," and I will admit it was overwhelming.

Lady Justice paintings and statues are common in the Western legal world. Often — as in the state flag of Virginia and in the Department of Justice statue — she has one breast partly or completely exposed which also was never the original intention for this symbol, but one of extreme modesty and fortitude.

About the photo, is from the Comstock Courthouse in Virginia City, Nevada, U.S.A.
